Primary Target Species
Giant Trevally (GT)
GTs up to 40–50 lbs move across these flats frequently, and because 60 lb+ fish are landed on a regular basis, choosing the right heavy-duty gear is critical.
Bonefish
Unlike high-volume destinations known only for small schoolies, Fanning Island is a trophy fishery. The bonefish here average a solid 4 to 5 pounds, with realistic shots at the 7-8lb mark.
Triggerfish
Yellowmargin, peach-faced, and titan triggerfish tail on shallow coral flats and lagoon ledges. Typically weighing between 4 and 10 pounds, they offer some of the most technical, demanding sight-casting on the atoll.
Secondary Target Species
Bumphead Parrotfish ("Bumpies")
Massive, armor-plated grazers patrolling the inner flats and reef transitions in small pods. Often weighing 25lb+, hooking a bumphead is an extreme test of heavy fly tackle, tippet strength, and angler stamina.
Napoleon Wrasse
Majestic, powerful reef wanderers found around deep lagoon cuts and outer reef edges. Landing one requires quick reflexes and heavy gear before they sound straight into the coral structure.
Bluefin Trevally
Highly aggressive, electric-blue feeders in the 8 to 10lb range that hunt flats edges and hammer surface flies.
What makes fishing on Fanning special?
Fanning has miles of white-sand flats and a large lagoon that see almost no fishing pressure, with no crowds and no boat traffic. Bonefish run on the bigger side, typically 3–5 lbs with trophies of 8–10 lbs or more. Giant trevally commonly reach 30–60 lbs, and much bigger fish are out there. The clear water makes for technical, rewarding sight fishing.
