FISHING blog post #2
July 7, 2026
There is "remote fly fishing," and then there is Fanning Island.
For anyone who has ever stepped foot on our untouched flats here in Kiribati, you know it feels less like a typical travel destination and more like a time machine. The water is pristine, the bonefish and GTs are wild, and the natural beauty is entirely unmatched.
But keeping a paradise like this untouched doesn't happen by accident. It takes deliberate action, deep partnerships, and a commitment to putting back more than we take out.
As we look toward the future, we are incredibly proud to share some major milestones in our journey toward true regenerative tourism. These are efforts that are bringing the global fly-fishing community right to our shores to help protect our local marine ecosystems.
Shaking Hands at the Wasatch Expo
If you caught us at the Wasatch Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Expo earlier this year, you probably saw a very familiar face representing our family. A massive thank you to our brother Abe Tomco for volunteering his time, energy, and deep passion for these waters to help us run the Fanning Huts booth.
Building long-term, face-to-face relationships with anglers who care about the sport as much as they care about the environment is exactly why we love being a part of these events. Meeting so many passionate folks who share our vision for sustainable fishing reminds us why we do what we do.
A Greater Future: Partnering with the Saltwater Guides Association
Our presence at the expo opened the door to a collaboration that is incredibly close to our hearts. Thanks to an introduction by Abe, Fanning Huts has officially partnered with the Saltwater Guides Association
This collaboration is a massive milestone for our family business and for Kiribati as a whole. By joining forces, we are actively pushing a regenerative tourism model that ensures our saltwater fishery thrives for generations to come. We look forward to welcoming their team and community out to Fanning Island to experience this world-class fishery firsthand and collaborate on conservation strategies that protect our resources.
It Takes a Village (and an Airline)
Of course, building a bridge between a remote Pacific island and the global fly-fishing community is never a solo effort.
We want to give a special shoutout to Cameron Petersen for capturing the stunning footage we use to share our island home with the world, and our vital partner Air Kiribati for their ongoing dedication to safely connecting our islands together.
Pack Your Bags, Protect the Flats
When you book a trip with Fanning Huts, you aren't just checking off a bucket-list destination. You are directly supporting the local community and becoming a part of a movement to protect one of the last truly wild places on Earth.
